Waterloo veteran

Riley Headstone

One of the earliest graves in Staveley cemetery is that of Corporal John Riley who served with Captain Mercer’s “G” Troop at Waterloo in 1815.

Attached to the Royal Horse Artillery, John served as a gunner and, according to Dr Arthur Court, he became excited when “he recounted the story of his guns mowing down the advancing Frenchmen.”
